Romeo and Juliet coming to a theater near you Valentines Day Weekend

The great and incomparable Phylicia Rashad's daughter Condola Rashad will have her first theatrical debut this Valentine's day weekend. Well sort of...

Portraying Juliet in the revival of William Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet on Broadway during the fall of 2013 Condoloa Rashad co-starred with the great Orlando Bloom to mixed reviews.

Now their Broadway run will come to over 2,000 theaters in all 50 states over the Valentine's day weekend  February 13 - 19, 2014. Check your local listings

I personally love this concept of bringing Broadway shows to the theaters. I would love to see all of the plays that come to Broadway or even Off Broadway shows but I live in Atlanta and have yet to travel outside of the south. I really wish that Condola's mother Phylicia Rashad's all-black Broadway play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was released in theaters when it was out back in 2008. I'm secretly still hoping it comes to DVD or Streaming.

Nevertheless if you or your Valentines day date enjoys theater or just love the Rashad's check you local listings and go out to a theater near you and view this film. Kevin Hart starts the new year off right by having his movie Ride Along become the number 1 movie in American this MLK weekend. Bringing in over $40 million or averaging $15,000/theater.

2 New DVD Releases today.

 

Two great films from 2013 are out today for DVD release.

The great film Fruitvale Station starring Michael B Jordan alongside Octavia Spencer. If you have not seen this film please go and check it out. It's a true store chronicling the life and last day of Oscar Grant who was horribly murdered on New Year's Eve 2008.

The Butler is also being released today on DVD starring the great Forrest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. I loved Oprah's performance in this film. This film is a loosely based true story following the career of the real life Eugene Allen and his career as a Whitehouse Butler.

Also Congratulations to the cast of 12 Years a slave on their win at the Golden Globes for Best Picture.

2013 Movie Recap.

The year 2013 has often been called the best year for black films in Hollywood in a very long time. The year saw a slew of biographical films or films loosely based on a true story. Films such as Fruitvale Station, The Butler, and even 12 years a slave.

This year also saw some great films in all other genres like Tyler Perry’s Temptation, or romantic comedies like Baggage Claim and The Best Man Holiday.

This year was also the year of great black directors, with newbies Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and Steve Mcqueen (12 Years of Slave)

I have also been introduced to a host of web – series like the gay drama Free-fall or the thought proving political satire Unwritten Rules as well as the Marriage Tour and Oh The Struggle

I have enjoyed this year of films, t.v. shows and web-series. I feel that this year in film has caused the audience to pause and think as well as laugh and cry and I hope 2014 will be another great year for film in Black HollyWood.

Meagan Good in Anchorman 2: The legend continues

Meagan Good will star along side the very funny and very silly SNL alum Will Ferrell. She will portray Ron Burgundy's new love interest Linda Jackson.

With a very strong marketing campaign partially on behalf of Will Ferrell portraying the character Ron Burgundy on actual news networks; Anchorman 2 should open at #1

Classic Holiday Films

I love the movie This Christmas featuring Idris Elba, Loretta Devine, Chris Brown, Regina King, and Lauren London. Although this film is recent as far as classics go, I feel that in the years ahead the film This Christmas will be a holiday classic for years to come.
