The movie The Butler has been in the top 5 movies for the
last 3 weeks. I finally saw the movie about 2 weeks ago. I must say the film
was hard to watch for me, it brought about several conflicting emotions within
me. On the one hand Forest Whitaker’s character Cecil Gaines reminded me of how
hard of a worker my Grandfather was. On the other hand I was uncomfortable with
the use of the term house nigger several times in the film. I understand that
this term was the reality of the time depicted in the film but I wish it was
more understood than said.
I did love the acting of Terrence Howard, Forest Whitaker,
David Oyelowo, and Elijah Kelley but Oprah Winfrey stole the movie. She did an
awesome job in her role as Gloria Gaines. She was very funny, she was enticing,
she was entertaining and she was true to the character. To me this was her best
role in a film since The Color Purple. I hope she is rewarded for her
performance.
Overall I think if you’re a fan of anyone in the film or its
director Lee Daniels check out the film for yourself if you have not already. I
do congratulate everyone who is a part of this film for its success.
